These tiles have been much sought after by eco builders, and have just become available again after a two year gap - the German factory closed down in 2005 but the equipment was bought by new owners and thankfully has now been put into production again. Made from recycled plastics (52%) and kaolin clay (48%), these dark grey slates are fairly rigid, similar in flexibility to 6mm ply wood. Each tile is 240mm by 380mm, 30 slates per square metre. Tile thickness is 4.5mm, giving a relatively light weight roof - approx 450g per tile (13.5 kg per square metre). Fixing system is conventional - nail through slate into wooden battens (pre-drilling not required). Price is per square metre (30 tiles). Guarantee: 10 years, life expectancy at least 30 years, after which colour loss may occur but the slate should stay structurally intact. Samples available (see below). Delivery time: usually 5 working days, but please check with us first if delivery date is crucial.

These ridge tiles can be used with the recycled slates, but are made in the USA by a different factory. NB these ridge tiles DO NOT contain recycled material. The ridge tiles overlap lengthways. As an alternative ridge finish for recycled plastic slates, use flashing or a proprietory dry roof ridge system from a builders merchant.

Sawn red cedar roofing shingles. Produced in Cornwall from local Western Red Cedar grown in FSC certified woodlands. The shingles in the photo are on a new roof - with exposure they will go silver grey within a year. Recommended roof pitch is 45 degrees, with a breather membrane and battens at 6" centres, or with sarking board.
Price is per pack (2.2 square metres per pack, approximately 36 shingles per square metre, approx 79 shingles per pack).

Chestnut or oak roofing shingles, hand made in Hampshire by a small woodland enterprise using local chestnut or oak from sustainably managed woodland. Each shingle has been cleft with an axe and froe, then dressed with a draw knife on a shaving horse in time honoured fashion. Widths of shingles varies, length is 15 inches (approx 380mm). Spacing of battens is 6 inches (150mm), yield is 65-70 shingles to the square metre. Price is per square metre. Can also be made in custom sizes - contact us to discuss.
