one-day course

spoon carving (beginners)

location: Tower Hamlets, London

This is a perfect introduction to spoon carving, and no previous woodworking experience is necessary. That said, even an experienced carpenter or cabinet maker would gain much from carving a spoon. The main focus of the day will be the introduction of carving techniques that will allow you to carve safely with confidence so you can create at home too.

Spoon carving is great because the tools are cheap and you don’t need a workshop or even a workbench, you can even do it in your own front room.

You'll learn how to keep your knife razor sharp and how to transform a log/branch into a "spoon blank" with an axe. This course is unique in as much as you will be learning from an Artisan craftsman. However, carving with a knife truly is a folk craft (folk is you by the way), and the workshop is designed to provide you with  strong foundation to create all sorts of carved objects.

Cooking with an organic spoon you've crafted with your own hands from locally sourced wood is an amazing feeling.

All the necessary tools will be provided for the course and there will be the opportunity to buy tools to take away (luckily the best knife for spoon carving is just £15!)

The courses are lead by Barn - a respected Green Woodworker and professional Spooner with extensive teaching experience. These courses are for adults only but are appropriate for the beginner and those with a little experience that wish to hone their skills.
