one-day course

wattle & weaving for gardeners

location: nr Bideford, Devon

Willow is a very versatile and colourful material that can be used for a wide range of supports and containers for the garden. This workshop will give participants an opportunity to make a garden support for climbing plants or a pot cover or even a compostable compost bin for those with some previous experiance. The ultimate in sustainability and attractive too! No previous experience with willow weaving is needed although those with some experience will find some new ideas. We will use willow that is grown on the willow beds at Well Farm so there will be a good choice of colourful, organically grown material to choose from. We will use some simple basket making techniques which you can adapt to a wide range of projects.

Tutor Maggi Rogers has been developing her skills as a basketmaker for over 10 years, and has worked with North American basketmakers on cedar bark baskets, and with New Zealand basketmakers on flax baskets. She also meets with other members of the Basketmakers Association to harvest rush on the Somerset levels which is used to make baskets and hats.

Participants should bring:

  • Sharp secateurs
  • A Penknife
  • A camera might be useful
  • Materials will cost approx £5.00
