residential weekend course

canoe building

venue: Redfield Community, Bucks

This course has been designed by boat-builder Dan Carter, to enable anyone to build a canoe or any other small boat from plywood and timber with a two-part epoxy glue. The course will focus on the open-topped Canadian style of canoe but the lessons learned are useful for building all sorts of small boats from plans available on the internet.

You will be working on real boats the tutor is building at the time of the course. The participants will spend most of the day actually working on canoes in progress at different stages of completion so that you will know how to turn plans on a flat piece of paper into a three-dimensional boat that floats. You will learn about the safe use and handling of the glue to affect long-lasting effective joints and structural qualities that they can be relied on to perform.

The course includes:

  • health and safety
  • tooling requirements
  • lofting plans
  • cutting out and preparing the wood
  • glue preparation, additives and application
  • ideas for finishing off and seating

All tools and materials are provided as well as gloves and goggles. Sources for the plans, glue, and sustainable wood products will be handed out on the course.
