weekend course
round wood timber framing |
This
course is run by Adrian Leaman of Wholewoods,
and is for anyone interested in constructing rustic buildings on
their site using local coppice wood. We will be using green wood
timber framing techniques and freshly felled trees to create an
unusual outdoor structure. ‘Round’ wood is young coppiced
trees, not sawn or squared, sometimes with the bark still on.
The design
we will be following can be put together by a small team of people
in a few days; we will be using traditional hand tools. You will
also learn how to read trees, their different characteristics and
uses, how to get the best from your woodworking tools, how to work
with the grain, and elegant ways to join wood.
The benefits
of using round wood:
-
greener - no need for industrial proceessing to square the timbers,
and no waste
-
cheaper
- you don’t have to pay someone to process the wood, or
buy machinery to do it
-
it's the origin of DIY - the way we’ve been doing it for
thousands of years, and the way it’s still done in many
parts of the world
-
uses
less wood, and no need to fell veteran trees
-
possible
to use local wood of many species
-
encourages
coppicing and sustainable woodland management
-
creates
unusual and unique buildings that maintain the beautiful natural
form of trees
-
structures are lighter - less need for serious foundations
