one-day course

hurdle making

location: nr East Grinstead, Sussex

Hazel wattle hurdles have been made in the countryside for hundreds of years.  Originally used for penning sheep, they are now almost exclusively used for garden fences, screens and dividers.

This course, led by an experienced hurdlemaker will show you how to select the correct material for the various stages of the hurdle, split each hazel rod into two halves and weave your own small hurdle.  This course is available for up to 8 participants only.

All tools and equipment will be provided but if you have your own billhook you are most welcome to bring it.  This is an outdoor course and you should be prepared to spend the day in the open with suitable clothing and, particularly, stout footwear (NO WELLINGTONS PLEASE).  Please be aware that hurdlemaking is a strenuous activity particularly for the hands, arms and shoulders.
