one-day course

making & hanging shingles

venue: Ecclesall Woods Sawmill, Sheffield

This course is run by Jasper Prachek of the Working Woodlands Trust. It is a practical course; participants will be making shingles from logs, and hanging them on a demonstration wall.

Wooden shingles provide a hard-wearing roof (or wall) made from natural, local materials. Shingles represent probably the lowest embodied-energy roofing system - you just need to fell a tree and split shingles from it!

Participants will:

  • discuss tools to be used (wedges, froes, mallets etc) and the types of wood that can be used
  • watch a demonstration on how to use the tools and make shingles
  • cleft their own shingles (to take home if they wish)
  • discuss fixings (nails, pegs, wire) and hang shingles on a structure on-site
  • make their own wooden mallet (again, to take home)
  • have the opportunity to discuss their own projects
