one-day course

keeping chickens

venue: Gorgie City Farm, Edinburgh

This one-day poultry course is run by Pauline Shannon of Deanbank.

The day is an introduction to poultry keeping, for those who are about to try and those who are interested in knowing a bit more about this fascinating hobby.  It will be hands-on, with the opportunity to handle hens. You will learn how to clip wings and test whether hens are in lay.   There will be a demonstration of how to humanely and quickly dispatch a bird and prepare it for the table (even those who do not intend to eat their birds should know how to dispatch them confidently in case it ever becomes necessary).

The course covers:

  • choosing and buying your hens
  • rules and regulations
  • feeding and housing your chosen hens
  • pests and diseases including common cures
  • how to dispatch and prepare a bird for the table (optional)
  • the egg
  • where to go for advice and help

Whether chickens are the first step towards smallholding, or family pets that produce great eggs, you will leave with the information you need to look after them well and enjoy them.
