This course is run by Pauline Shannon of Deanbank. The day is an introduction to pig keeping for those who are about to try and those who are interested in knowing a bit more about this fascinating hobby. You will learn the things you need to know to look after them properly and give them a healthy, happy life. They, in return, will provide you with the best pork you have ever tasted.
The course covers:
- looking at different breeds and their suitability for your needs
- buying weaners - what to look for
- legislation
- where to go for advice and help
- general health, including worming, injections and basic first aid
- fencing and equipment
- housing
- feeding
- pig handling
- breeding
- the benefits to your land from keeping pigs
- taking the pigs to slaughter: identification, loading, traceability
- the end result - cuts of meat
This fascinating pig day will help you decide if pigs are for you and open your eyes to the reality of pig keeping. It will also guide you through the paperwork and legislation to keep you prepared and on the right side of the law.
