two-day course

make your own natural soaps

venue: Gorgie City Farm, Edinburgh

This course is run by Jim Little of the Caurnie Soaperie.

Participants will be making a vegetable soap using the cold process, with the addition of herbs and spices, from the kitchen, the garden and from the wild.

Day 1 covers saponification and how to get it right, mixing by hand and with a food blender, making small and large batches. You will work out your mix, depending on what kind of soap you want to make (e.g. ordinary vegetable soaps, locally-sourced vegetable soaps, including rapeseed, or castille soaps - with olive and coconut).

Day 2 covers curing and finishing, including chamfering and making different shapes.

Jim will bring some month-old soap (soap takes a month to cure) for participants to practice finishing, structure effects, packaging and presentation as gifts.

The course also includes:

  • troughs and moulds
  • (flat) slabbing and (long) posts
  • cutting slabs and posts
  • special effects
  • storage, including humidity issues
