one-day course

permaculture gardening

venue: Gorgie City Farm, Edinburgh

Grow your own food to enjoy, working with nature, and design it so you don’t have to break your back in the process! This course will explore how permaculture can be applied to create beautiful, productive and wildlife-friendly gardens.

This course with Lusi Alderslowe and Anita Aggarwal is open to anyone interested in using permaculture principles and design in their garden or allotment, from complete beginners to experienced gardeners. It will be useful whether you intend to garden a window sill or a large garden.

Topics covered will include: design principles and tools; mulching;  annual and perennial food crops; gardening for wildlife; composting; pest control without chemicals; rainwater harvesting; and growing plants for fertility.

Discussions about what participants want from the course will be followed by theory sessions and practical demonstrations. By the end of the course, participants will have learnt several practical techniques and design tools that they will then be able to apply to their own gardens and allotments.

a gap between tenements was cleared of mountains of rubbish and a beautiful, productive community garden was created. The circular bed was a delightful focus in this design which included local people in creating an outdoor venue for community events, which ranged from lantern processions to a play and even a child’s birthday party
