one-day course

smallholding

venue: Gorgie City Farm, Edinburgh

This one day smallholding course is run by Pauline Shannon of Deanbank.

We will try to cram in as much useful information as we can about setting up and running a smallholding, touching on the key aspects of poultry, pig, sheep and cattle keeping, plus small-scale arable. The course will provide an overview and look at livestock breeds, practical requirements and a few anecdotes to make sure you get the most from a smallholding.

The course covers:

  • getting started: what you need to think about first -  how? why? where? etc.
  • animal husbandry
  • fencing and housing
  • fruit and vegetable production on a small scale, plus the possibility of growing fodder crops
  • legislation and paperwork
This introductory smallholding course will give you a taste of what is involved in setting up your own smallholding and help you decide if this is a realistic option for you.  It will give you an idea of the things you have to think about before you start, and the confidence to go for it.
