one-day course

batteries for renewables

venue: Hackney City Farm, London

Optimising power storage is a key necessity for achieving good results and anticipated returns from off-grid power systems. Batteries appear pretty simple, and installing them in your system can be deceptively easy. Yet you may already have discovered for yourself that trying get the best out of them and making them last seems, to many, rather more of a black art.

This course is intended to offer in-depth theory of day-to-day power storage calculation, decision making, management for systems and methods of measuring the dynamic responses of your system as power is fed in and consumed.

Batteries are intentionally a long-term investment and are chemistry rather than circuitry based. So like all chemistry-based relationships they respond best to being treated with the kind of TLC that they appreciate. That’s where the art form begins; knowing what to look for and how to interpret their responses to know what they need in the short, medium and long term.

Course topics include:

  • specifying your system: recognising, differentiating, evaluating and selecting from the gamut of market options; performance expectations vs. label specifications
  • commissioning and conditioning
  • healthy power consumption guidelines
  • charging: the range of sources and styles; measurement, interpretation and optimisation
  • maintenance for longevity
  • stock health testing, replacement, recycling and upgrading
  • upcoming technologies
