one-day course

recycling clothes & textiles

venue: Hackney City Farm, London

This course is run by June Allnutt of Recycle & Sew.

The aim of the workshop is to recycle old clothes that you bring along, but there will also be T-shirts and second-hand clothes available for people to use, as well as a huge amount of scraps.

Firstly we will all get to know each other and inspire each other with a small discussion about what each of us want to do with the clothes we have. Then we will all cut up, modify, alter, enlarge, shrink and generally re-arrange everything.

Be unique in the way you dress. Don't be a clone, or use your body to advertise corporate giants. Be 'no logo'!

The course will cover:

  • pollution from the fashion and textile industry
  • sustainable consumer behaviour
  • basic sewing and weaving techniques
  • re-designing clothes, bags and furnishings
  • work on individual projects
  • scouring magazines for style inspiration
  • traditional circular weaving demonstration and practice
  • weaving a bag and a purse from recycled materials
  • ideas for Christmas and birthday presents
