one-day course

compost toilets

venue: Hackney City Farm, London

The course is run by Sarah Bunker (aka Bunk) who has been fanatically interested in compost toilets since she and fellow communards built a twin-vault system at Beech Hill Community, Devon, in 1991.

The course will look in depth at compost toilets and how they work, the wide variety of systems which can be built or bought and build details of treebogs, wheeliebin and twin-vault toilets. Students should leave with a thorough grounding in the principles of composting human waste, and practical understanding of how to achieve this.

The course includes:

  • a wide-ranging look at different compost toilet systems
  • the anatomy of the compost toilet - how all the components work
  • common misunderstandings
  • proper maintenance and troubleshooting
  • pathogens and how to deal with them
  • inspiring images of compost toilets!
