This course is run by Brian Middlemiss of London & Southern Roof Training

Whether you have a straw-bale house, a rammed earth house or a conventional building - you're going to need a roof!
This course is for you if you are considering building a new roof, or just repairing or insulating an existing one. Whether you are employing a builder or doing the work yourself, it will help you to understand more about how a house works.

The course covers:

  • roofing materials, and some of the environmental and sustainability issues involved
  • ventilation, insulation, moisture, vents, vermin, and rot
  • holes in roofs: skylights, vents, chimneys and leaks
  • gutters, and where the water goes
  • adding solar hot water and photovoltaic tiles to a roof
  • loft conversions
  • employing a builder
  • practical work: fixing loose or broken tiles & slates, demonstration roof, calculating cover, working with different types of tiles & slates, felts & membranes, insulation, fittings and gutters
