one-day course

sustainable energy for the home

venue: Heeley City Farm, Sheffield

This course is run by Nick Parsons, manager of South Yorkshire Energy Centre, a centre of demonstration, awareness-raising, advice and training in energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable building. It will take a hurtle through the ways of generating, saving and keeping energy in the home.

The course is for anyone wanting to reduce their energy bills and their CO2 emissions, and needing to know how to prioritise and focuse their efforts. For example, from an environmental and cost perspective, it's important to insulate your home properly, and explore all avenues for reducing energy use before looking into installing renewables.

Points covered throughout the day:

  • insulation: the importance of keeping it all in
  • air-tightness: ventilation good, draughts bad
  • active renewable energy technologies: solar hot water, solar pv, wind turbines, wood stoves, ground source heat pumps
  • passive technologies
  • green tariffs
  • grants
  • the cost-effectiveness of different technologies
  • questions & answers

The course will also include a walkabout to look at the various renwable technologies installed locally, and a chance to see how South Yorkshire Energy Centre's heat-load dropped from 24kW before works to 5.5 after!

nothing cosier than a wood stove - with a back boiler they can heat your water too, in combination with solar (when it's too warm to light the stove)

insulate your house properly and reduce your energy use before you consider installing renewables - you don't want to go to the trouble of generating your own heat and electricity, only to waste it

solar hot water is a reliable and cost-effective technology in the UK; and in combination with a wood stove, you can generate all your how water from renewables, all year round.
