location: Llanidloes, Powys, WalesA two - part course, at the end of which you will leave with your own coracle - and hopefully experience in using it! PART 1 28-30 May There will be a brief illustrated introduction to the history of coracle building and different regional designs, but most of this course will be hands-on. Your coracle will be of the Boyne design. Over the three days you will construct the hazel and willow framework for your vessel which will be left to set for the next session. The paddle will also be fashioned in this time and the seat made ready to insert. In the evenings you will have a chance to practice coracle handling on the pond. PART 2 18-19 June On the first day you will cover your coracle frame with calico and paint it with bitumen for waterproofing. You will finish the seat and if there is time left, try the vessel out on our pond. The second day will be spent sailing the coracles, first on still water to get the hang of paddling, then on to the greater challenges of the River Severn! Bring a spare set of clothes! Tutor Kevin Blockley has been an archaeologist since 1976 and director of Cambrian Archaeological Projects since 1992. He has a long standing interest in coracles and made his first ones in the Tyfi style, in the 1990s. Accommodation on the farm is in shared yurts (with beds) or rooms - and a few other odd places! It's simple, comfortable and beautiful but if you have problems with mobility or need a single room please let us know so we can put you somewhere more civilised or recommend other accommodation in the area. It is also possible to bring your own tent for £5 per person per night (pay on the weekend). Accommodation is free on Sunday evening if you need it. more on coracles
