one-day course

urban/small-space gardening

venue: Martineau Gardens, Birmingham

Growing plants in containers is fun and often the only practical option in certain situations - especially where space is limited, as is often the case in urban areas.

Container gardening is adaptable and versatile. Ideal for balconies, landings, patios, courtyards or roof areas - this method of growing allows you to create a perfect growing environment for any particular plant, and with the proper attention a container garden can be as productive as one planted directly in the ground.

The choice of containers is almost endless and the opportunity to recycle otherwise redundant objects makes for a very creative experience.

The course includes:

  • site analysis: soil structure and pH, size of space, orientation, micro-climate, measuring, drawing up a plan
  • choice of plants: vegetables suitable for small gardens, companion planting, wildlife-friendliness, productivity
  • containers: types, recycling, suitable plants, trees & shrubs, vegetables & herbs
  • maintenance: weed control, pruning, propagation, irrigation, mulching, pests & diseases, feeding
  • water gardens: sources of water, how to bring in light and sound, suitable plants, wildlife habitats
