course over several weekends

yurt making

venue: the Middlewood Trust, Lancashire

The dates for 2010 are Mar 6-7, 13-14, 20-21, and Apr 10-11, 17-18.

The course will teach you all the techniques of yurt building and allow you to build yourself a frame for a 16ft. diameter yurt suitable for camping, a spare room in the garden, events, workshops or living in. The frames are made from hazel poles with either a steam-bent split wood crown or a laminated plywood crown depending on your skills and preference.

The course includes:

  • peeling poles (lots of them!)
  • steam bending
  • putting kana (wall sections) together
  • making a crown
  • doorframes
  • how to put up and care for your yurt

There is a lot of work involved and the course is organised for every other weekend to allow extra work to be done in between. The cost for the course is for each yurt frame and we welcome more than one person working on each frame - bring a friend!

Course runs from 9 till 5 Saturday and Sunday, and you can arrive Friday evening if you like. The workshop will be made available in between courses to do extra bits of work.

Bring work clothes and stout footwear. Lunch will be provided each day. Bring your own food for evening meal and breakfast; cooking facilities and crockery/cutlery are available in our bunkhouse. Bunkhouse, yurt accommodation, plus camping available. Bring a sleeping bag.
