one-day course

basketmaking

venue: Ouseburn City Farm, Newcastle

Make your own basket with Northumberland basketmaker Ruth Thompson of Sylvan Skills.

On the day participants will learn to make a simple, round, stake and strand willow basket. This will involve:

  • learning to make the slath (a cross-shaped slath is what you make first in order to weave the round base)
  • various weaving techniques including pairing (a stroke that weaves around the slath to form the base)
  • three rod waling (the first, strong weave on the sides of the basket), and
  • English and French randing (the next stage of weaving, when you use the same number of fine weavers as there are stakes in order to create an even section of weaving)

We will also discuss:

  • how to sort and prepare the materials
  • the environment needed for basket making
  • equipment needed for basket making

We will refer to Susie Vaughan's book - Handmade Baskets From Nature's Colourful Materials.

If possible please can participants bring secateurs, and a sharp penknife/ Opinel knife or similar.
