one-day course

herbal medicine

venue: Ouseburn City Farm, Newcastle

This course is run by Keith Robertson, co-founder of the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine, which offers a four-year professional training and postgraduate degrees for medical herbalists.

He is also committed to the public having access to good quality information on herbs in order to treat themselves for minor ailments. An inspiring and entertaining teacher, he has over 20 years teaching, herb growing and herbal practice experience to draw on, and a beautiful herb garden on the Isle of Arran.

Herbal medicines have been the basis of healthcare as long as there have been humans - and animals have an instinctive ability to select herbs for healing. The pressures of modern society have dulled this knowledge in people, and this introductory course is aimed to help start the reawakening of these essential skills.

The course includes:

  • a brief overview of herbal medicines in history and their relevance to modern life
  • tasting samples of essential home remedy herbs – the finest way to get acquainted with herbs
  • herbal first aid – how to build up a natural cabinet for domestic first aid
  • discussion of specific minor health questions provided by the group
  • making your own herbal remedies to take home – a practical interactive demonstration of how to make an infusion, a decoction, a poultice and an ointment
