one-day course

green woodworking: pole lathe turning

location: nr Penrith, Cumbria

Be a bodger for a day! Enjoy being creative, keep some pieces for yourself and make some for friends and family as really special presents.

The tutor Chris Helliwell is a time-honoured bodger, and will be bringing 8 portable lathes for participants to use.

Possible items to create will be: a rolling pin for your kitchen;a dibber for your seedlings; a spirtle for your porridge; a (cool) Candlestick for your table. You might even be lucky enough to manage all four!

The pole lathe is used by two distinct groups the “Bodgers” like Chris, makers of chair parts, and the Bowl Turners whose machinery is heavier & harder to move. The bodgers’ lathes had to be portable to carry out to the woods and they are each driven and worked by one person.
