half-day course

running a mixed smallholding

venue: Pen y Bonc, Gwynedd

This is a less a course and more a relaxed guided tour of the smallholding at Pen y Bonc, aimed at people who are interested in starting on a small scale to grow their own food.  We will be showing what is being done and why. The cost is £15 for the afternoon, and kids come free.

We will be looking in turn at the various components of our mixed smallholding as well as examining the interaction and beneficial relationships between these components.

The afternoon is designed to be a leisurely and informal introduction into:

  • growing your own vegetables, fruit and salad crops
  • indoor growing under glass or polytunnels, the best designs and what's needed
  • keeping chickens, ducks and bees
  • coppicing trees and dealing with firewood

There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions

Please wear suitable clothing.  Sturdy footwear such as boots or wellies are recommended as well as protection from the weather, i.e. sun protection or waterproofs.
