one-day course

cider making

location: Sheffield

Cider (fermented from apples) and perry (from pears) are amongst the oldest drinks produced in the UK. As world leader, Britain is the foremost cyder making country in the world and has a marvellous tradition and heritage associated with the products. (Cyder is the term for the first pressing with nothing added; cider is made by adding up to ten times water to the volume of apple pomade.)

This one-day course is suitable for beginners, for those interested in making cider or perry at home and for anyone with an interest in these unique, versatile and tasty products.

Course content:

  • History, heritage and traditions of cider making
  • Types and use of apples
  • Choice and care of equipment
  • Milling and pressing of apples
  • Fermentation & Maturation
  • Blending & bottling

During the day, you will process a mix of apples (crab, cookers, eaters etc) that are not too old, in order to produce juice. If they are bruised or mishapen, that isn't a problem.

Ideally, you should have a demijohn in which to hold the juice (though if you do not posses one, they can be supplied - but let us know in advance if you wish to purchase one)

If you bring your own apples [tart ones are good, Mishapen are good, Littles ones are good !] you need approx 2 carries bags full.

The price of the course is £40, Feel free bring your own apples, but they will be available.
