one-day course

living willow structures

location: Sheffield

This course introduces willow as a beautiful material that is easy and very satisfying to work with.  During the day you will learn how living willow can be used to create exciting living structures such as arbors, domes, fences, magical creatures and furniture. You will work together to make a simple structure of your own design and make a small item to take home.

Points that will be covered during the day:

  • Living willow past and present
  • Willow varieties and their uses
  • Selecting good tools and materials
  • Planting and growing willow
  • Working with willow rods
  • Basic structure building techniques
  • Designing and making willow structures
  • Aftercare

The course is led by Anna Evans who grows a range of willows suitable for everything from fine basketry to land reclamation.  The holt is managed entirely by hand and no chemical sprays or fertilisers are used.  Anna has worked with adults and school groups to make living structures both large and small.  Examples include outdoor learning spaces, tunnels, arbors and magical creatures.
