five-day course

straw-bale building

location: nr Sudbury, Suffolk

This course will be a hands-on experience with construction focussing on building a 50m cartlodge at a traditional brickworks.

The location is a marvellous place, where bricks are still made by hand.  It looks just like the drawings in contemporary literature of a medieval brickworks.  The owner will give you a tour of the brickworks after work one evening.  Several members of the family work and live on the site, and your main host will be the owner.  A local caterer will be providing a home-made lunch every day.

The first three days will primarily be concerned with construction; the last two with plastering.  There is a list of local B&Bs and camping options that will be sent with directions, as participants will not be able to stay on site.

The course will be led by Barbara Jones, Britain's leading authority on strawbale construction.  She was behind the strawbale buildings that many of you will have seen on the TV programme Grand Designs.
