weekend course

bushcraft weekend

location: nr Swindon, Wiltshire

This two day course is specifically intended for the intermediate bushcrafter. The essential bushcraft skills learned on this course will enable you to go out into the countryside with minimal equipment and reside comfortably.

The first day will be spent learning knife and saw safety. You will be taught the correct way to handle these tools and you will be crafting various items throughout the weekend. We will look at both natural and artificial cordage and you will be shown different methods to find and make natural cordage from the plants around you. After lunch it’s straight on to constructing a weatherproof leaf litter shelter, which you will be spending the night in. It’s then onto game preparation, where you will be preparing the game ready for cooking.

The remainder of the evening will be spent around the central fire where you can relax and reflect on what you achieved during the day.

On the second day,  we will be making fire by friction using the bow drill method. We will also take a nature walk through the woods, where we will look at different trees and plants including some of their uses. We will then look at ways to collect, filter and purify water. After a woodland lunch there will be a friendly competition involving some of the skills which you have learned over the weekend.

Over the course of the weekend participants will learn:

  • How to light a fire without matches
  • Construct a weatherproof shelter
  • Some basic knots and lashings
  • How to find water and make it safe to drink
  • How to identify useful trees and plants
  • Game preparation and cooking techniques
  • Navigation with nature's help
  • Safety with back country cutting tools
