one-day course

introduction to bushcraft

location: nr Swindon, Wiltshire

A great introductory day course into the world of bushcraft. Participants will spend the early part of the morning learning some basic knots and lashing, putting them to use when erecting a basha (temporary shelter). The plants and trees surrounding the area will then be investigated, in particular how to distinguish between them and learning some of their uses. Then it's on to water, going through the processes of collection, filtration and purification.

The afternoon will start with the types of shelters used in bushcraft and wilderness living. A leaf litter shelter will be built using what nature has to offer. After this, firelighting. The basic principles will be taught and participants will be encouraged to have a go themselves, lighting a fire by friction using the bow drill method.

Over the course of the day participants will learn:

  • How to light a fire (without matches)
  • Construct a weatherproof shelter
  • Some basic knots and lashings
  • How to find water and make it safe to drink
  • How to identify useful trees and plants
  • Safety with back country cutting tools
