one-day course

survival day

location: nr Swindon, Wiltshire

A great day course which is designed to teach some basic woodland survival skills. During the course of the day we will be looking at various improvised/natural shelters used in survival situations and you will get a chance to construct a leaf litter shelter of your own. It’s then onto game preparation, where you will be given a pigeon and be shown how to prepare it ready for cooking.

After lunch we will be going on a nature walk through the woodland where we will be identifying trees and plants and looking at how some of them  can be used in a survival situation. We will then head down to the stream, where we will talk you through various methods of collecting, filtering and purifying water, making it safe to drink. Once back at camp we will then go through the basic principles of fire lighting, where you will get a chance to light a fire using the bow drill method.

Over the course of the day participants will learn:

  • How to light a fire (without matches)
  • Construct a weatherproof shelter
  • How to locate water
  • How to identify useful trees and plants for food
  • How to identify useful trees and plants for medicine
