two day course

rustic chair making

location: nr Telford, Shropshire

Create your own beautiful and uniquely crafted rustic chair.

First you will learn how to select the appropriate material to make a chair from coppiced hazel and other small diameter greenwood. Various construction techniques will then be discussed and demonstrated including mortice and tenon; simple but effective methods to create your chair.

Once the frame is complete, your tutor Neill Mapes will explain different methods of seating and you will be shown how to make a really professional looking seat for your chair using paper rush.

Neill designs and makes furniture, working with greenwood from native, sustainable sources. His work includes hedgerow furniture and sculpture using a variety of tree species such as ash, oak, sweet chestnut and yew; as well as acrylic canvases and digital artwork.
