one day course

trees for transition

location: nr Telford, Shropshire

This course explores the diverse role of trees and woods in the transition to a low carbon and sustainable future.

During the course we will:

  • Consider how trees provide multiple environmental, social and economic benefits
  • Examine how trees can be used for carbon management
  • Consider how and why tree cover in Britain could be increased
  • Cover topics as diverse as forestry, agro-forestry, forest gardens, woodfuel, the new Woodland Carbon Code, the NHS Forest, conservation and more
  • We plan to visit woods in the beautiful Severn Gorge to see trees in action and will visit woods in nearby Telford to see the vital role trees play in the urban landscape.

Drawing on his experience of forestry, conservation and community action, your course tutor Robin Walter will explain the Transition Town model of social change and how trees can support this change. Trees and woods can contribute in many ways, providing protection, regulating pollution and as natural habitats; as places of recreation, health and wellbeing; and not least providing timber, fuel, food and other products.

This course will be of particular interest to town planners, arborists and tree officers as well as to all those interested in trees generally and their increasing role and importance in the modern socio-economic climate of our country.

Robin Walter is a Chartered Forester who has worked for estates, private owners, the Woodland Trust, commercial contractors and in arboriculture.

The cost of the course includes a delicious two course homemade vegetarian lunch.
