two day course

trug making

location: nr Telford, Shropshire

By the end of the weekend you will have a unique hand-made, lightweight basket ideal for gardening, harvesting produce or shopping.

During the course you will make your trug using traditional hand tools and techniques. No previous green woodwork experience is necessary, as full guidance will be given to show you how to cleave sweet chestnut and dress it out using a shave horse and drawknife to make the handles and rims of the basket. Handles and rims are then bent using steaming techniques and secured with copper nails. Using a drawknife we then shave willow slats into profile, soaking them to bend them into shape. These are secured to the chestnut frame using copper tacks, which complete your trug basket.
