four half-day courses

starting an allotment

location: nr Thornbury, South Gloucestershire

This is a series of four half day courses run throughout the year and is suitable for anyone who has a vegetable garden or allotment or is thinking of starting one.  It aims to give you the knowledge and skills you will need to create an attractive and productive plot all year round.  We focus on organic principles and methods.

Run in our vegetable garden here at Mumbleys, the course will be run on four separate half days, spread throughout the year, giving you the chance to practice what you have learnt in between each session.  There will be a chance to look at growing under cover as well as outside with a combination of practical application and theory given by your tutor, Jo Wright, a successful horticultural lecturer, with a first class degree in horticulture and over fifteen years experience of growing flowers, herbs and vegetables.

Part One – Preparing for the Growing Year:  Assessing soil types and crop rotation, we will look at how you can get a head start with preparing your beds and starting off some vegetables from seed.  There is a guide to tools.  There are some easy veg to get you started and how to select varieties that will meet your needs.

Part Two – Getting Underway  With the growing season starting, we look at planting, successional sowing and creating supports.  We look at pest and disease control, companion planting and tackling weeds.

Part Three – Mid Summer:  With the plot in full swing, we discuss water management, composting, organic fertilisers, propogation and starting veg for harvesting in the winter.

Part Four – Harvesting: How to cope with bumper crops, growing undercover to extend the season and how and when to use your compost.  Sowing and planting crops to overwinter ready for next year.
