one-day course

felt making - autumn hats and scarves

location: nr Thornbury, South Gloucestershire

Felt-making is a fascinating, versatile skill, which is easy to learn and has endless applications. It is amazing what can be achieved in one day and this course is suitable for beginners and experienced felt-makers alike as we will learn a number of different techniques.

Felt making is a very ancient craft which many people will have found by accident! If a wool sweater is washed too hot in a washing machine or spun too fast, it will shrink and felt.

At the beginning of the course, we will learn how to make felt and discover a variety of methods and the effects you can produce whilst reviewing the equipment needed. Then we will move on to designing and creating a beautiful and unique scarf and/or hat of varying complexity for you to take home. All equipment and materials are supplied and we have a lovely selection of colours and accessories for you to choose from .

This is an addictive hobby which is easy to carry on unaided so there will be extra material to buy should you wish to continue at home.

The tutor is Jill Denton, who has worked for most of her life with textiles in one way or another, and now works mainly in handmade felt, which she was introduced to about 15 years ago. Jill also lectures in Textiles & Fashion at North Devon College and regularly teaches other textile-related workshops and courses at all levels at various venues around the country.

Please bring a small handtowel to work on.
