one-day course

starting with poultry & waterfowl

location: nr Thornbury, South Gloucestershire

This is a one-day course designed to give you a complete introduction to keeping hens, ducks and geese. Whether you just want to have a few pretty birds in the garden or whether you plan to be self-sufficient, we will show you how to care for them and what they need for a happy, healthy life. We look at the breeds available, options for housing, handling, feeding and healthcare. We advise you on protecting your birds from predators and selling eggs or hatching your own chicks or ducklings.

Programme:

Part One – Selection of Breeds: Different types of birds for different requirements – eggs, meat, good looks or all three! A discussion of the pros and cons of each type.

Part Two – Choosing a House: Style & type of houses available and suitable run systems. Moving, cleaning and maintenance. Keeping birds in and predators out!

Part Three – Handling, Feeding & Healthcare: How to handle your birds properly and how to catch them if you need to. What to feed them. How to keep them healthy and what to look out for.

Part Four – Selling Eggs/Producing Meat/Breeding: Rules & regulations about selling eggs. Hatching eggs under a hen or in an incubator. Keep fattening birds and caring for young stock.

You can camp onsite if there is space. Let us know if you are interested when you book.
