one-day course

rag rug making

location: nr Thornbury, South Gloucestershire

If you have ever dismissed creating a rug out of rags as being dull and uncreative, think again. The tutor, Jenni Stuart-Anderson is one of the foremost artists in this field and her creations are fabulous.

During the workshop she will demonstrate the traditional techniques of hooking and progging strips of fabric through hessian backing to make rugs, wall hangings or seat mats.

You may start a progged project to finish at home which only requires a simple tool and can be worked on knee or table, giving a shaggy, cut pile. You may prefer to make a sampler using the different techniques or decorate a hessian bag - a useful sampler.

There will be an opportunity to try hooking with a hand hook and with a speed hook making a series of loops through hessian, stretched on a frame. More pictorial detail can be achieved with this technique.

Jenni will have rugs and books to show you and tools to try or buy plus hessian, hessian bags, frames, books and cards for sale. You might like to bring your own hessian bag, granny's tools etc.

You will need to bring some rags* - at least a carrier bag full, and there will be others to swap and sample from.

*Suitable materials: plain or patterned fabric e.g. sewing offcuts, coats, dresses, tee shirts, blankets, curtains - nothing too loosely woven. It is a good idea to try different types of fabric to see the different effects you can get - could be woollens, cottons, synthetics. For hooking, different fabrics can be used but I use mainly machine knitted jumpers or T shirts. All sorts of fabrics and yarn work well on a raggy bag. If you bring any kind of embroidery or other frame you could try hooking on that, or try mine or hook on a bag.
