one-day course

sheep shearing for beginners

location: nr Thornbury, South Gloucestershire

Introduction: This one day course is designed to give you a complete introduction to shearing sheep and is run by two very experienced professional shearers, who work all over the world.

The Course: This is a combination of demonstration and practice, with opportunities to participate at all levels. If you wish to sign up with a particularly keen partner, but don’t actually want to do the shearing, that is fine! There are plenty of jobs to occupy an Assistant Shearer!

Part One – Guidelines & Demonstration: The dos and don’ts of shearing – when and where to do it. Examples of how to handle and shear a sheep.

Part Two – Practice: Your turn to try your hand at a number of different breeds and sizes. Taking it in turns to select the sheep and shear them.

Part Three – Routine Maintenance of Equipment: What you need to buy in the way of shearing equipment and how to look after it.

Part Four – Fleeces: What to do with your wool afterwards.

Equipment: This is hot work, but it may be a cold day, so layers are best, a boiler suit over your ordinary clothes is ideal or bring something clean to change into. Wear wellies or stout shoes.

You can camp onsite if there is space. Let us know if you are interested when you book.
