one-day course

smallholder taster day

location: nr Thornbury, South Gloucestershire

Not sure where to start? Come and look round a smallholding and discuss land requirements, time commitment, skills & knowledge needed.

The tutor, Jules Moore, has done it herself from scratch, and can talk with experience of what you need to know.

We will look at all the livestock in turn - hens, ducks, sheep, cattle, pigs and bees - with a look at what keeping each type entails. Then we will guide you through the process of deciding where to start and what you need to do next.

Programme:

Part One – Starting Small - Poultry & Waterfowl : A great way to start producing your own food – fresh eggs are hard to beat & keeping hens & ducks is very easy. We will tell you how to get started.

Part Two – Larger Animals – Sheep, Cattle & Pigs: A guide to the implications of keeping larger animals – space requirements, management, feeding and housing.

Part Three – A Bit about Bees: Why bees are an important part of a smallholder’s life and how rewarding they are to keep in even the smallest garden.

Part Four – The Good, the Bad & the Messy: Come & meet our livestock face to face and try out your handling skills. A chance to meet all our animals and find out just what fun they are and how rewarding a lifestyle this can be.

You can camp onsite if there is space. Let us know if you are interested when you book.
