five-day camp

family camp

location: on Dartmoor, Devon

A truly wild and wonderful blend of nature awareness, bushcraft and storytelling in a friendly camp setting. The inspirational activities going on during the week offer something for everyone. The whole community/outdoor living experience is guaranteed to deepen the relationship you and your family have to the natural world, forever.

The camp takes place in an exquisite setting in Dartmoor. Acres of deciduous wildwood to explore, a babbling brook in which to paddle and meadows in which to watch the butterflies, foxes and deer.

The programme will be diverse and flexible, to accommodate the wide-ranging needs of family groups. The kinds of things we might expect to get up to include wildlife watching, bat-detecting and bug hunting at night, wild-fire making and wild food gathering, silent movement, scavenger hunts, woodcraft, listening to great stories / music around the campfire and of course, to satisfy the most primitive home-makers in us all - den-making!

This week is primarily a holiday for most people and so we aim to strike a balance between doing and being, structure and openness. The day will usually start with a circle-time followed by a group activity session that lasts most of the morning. The afternoon is for play, to join in on a more low-key or craft activity or simply to spend time with your family/friends. There will be time set aside for the adult activities particularly those interested in acquainting themselves with the bushcraft syllabus and our resident craft tutor, Bernard Graves, will be offering traditional Blacksmithing sessions - a chance to build an Iron Age pit forge and make a variety of iron treasures! At night we will go for nocturnal walks, enjoy stories and play games that help you feel at home in the dark.

All meals and materials are included in the cost of the camp. Tents are available for hire, if required, at £5-£10 per tent per night.

Event Leaders: the camp is led by two experienced outdoorsmen - Chris Salisbury and Chris Holland, with craft tutor Bernard Graves.
