one-day course seashore edibles

location: East Prawle, South Devon

The coastline of this country has a rich harvest of food material. Our ancestors would have relied upon the seashore to provide a major portion of their diet, especially during the lean times of the year. Edible seaweeds, molluscs, fish and coastal plants are abundant in the clean and clear waters of South Devon.

This day out on the beaches and bays of this beautiful coastline will be spent foraging on the strandline, rock-pool rambling, snorkelling, beachcombing and preparing a diverse menu of seashore foods using a number of different cooking methods.

There may also be time for a spot of fishing, swimming and paddling so please feel free to bring swimsuits / wetsuits / snorkels etc.

Course leader - Chris Salisbury or Robin Bowman. Chris worked for many years as an education officer for Devon Wildlife Trust. With a background in the theatre, a training in therapy and a career in environmental education he uses every creative means at his disposal to encourage people to enjoy and value the natural world. He has worked with Ray Mears and John Rhyder, amongst many others.Avid birdwatcher, mountain walker, canoeist and wild swimmer, Robin Bowman spends extended periods of time alone in wilderness areas. A founder member of Landmatters Permaculture Community he has worked with a large variety of schools and organisations, and set up ‘Wildwood Journeys’ to run bushcraft & nature awareness courses. Robin shares his skills, knowledge and experience with passion and humour.
