one-day course

thatching

venue: Ty Mawr Lime, Powys, Wales

This one day course is designed to give an introduction to the craft of thatching. Led by master thatcher Alan Jones from West Wales, the day starts with an illustrated talk on the history and styles of thatching. It then focuses on the practical application of a thatched roof on a purpose built display. There will be plenty of opportunity to have a go!

The agenda for the day includes:

  • vernacular styles across Wales & the UK
  • what is and isn't repairable
  • new and repair thatch projects
  • selecting materials
  • growing and harvesting your own straw and water reed

All work will be done at ground level, and the course is suitable for homeowners, builders, architects and all enthusiasts!

There is a small, basic campsite for course participants, and a list of local accommodation is available if required.
