weekend course (camping)
tree bogs |
The natural way to answer the call of nature. A tree bog is a very low-maintenance compost loo. The materials compost in situ and the nutrients are not removed. You don't even dig a hole - the materials sit above ground within a rat-proof cage.
Tree bogs allow for the natural breakdown of material, incorporating it back into the soil to feed tree roots. Often people plant willows (particularly moisture- and nutrient-hungry trees) around tree bogs.
A tree bog never has to be emptied. The material continues breaking down and the level continues to drop, and so you never handle the decomposed material. A soak can be added, such as fallen leaves or pine needles. Tree bogs are ideal for woodlands, camp sites, allotments or community gardens.
On the course you will:
- build a tree bog, plus a pole-frame structure to house it
- get to use and inspect an existing tree bog, to see how it's doing
- talk about structural requirements and maintenance
- discuss micro-rainwater harvesting from the structure, for hand-washing
- talk about tree-planting and the use of trees in conjunction with tree bogs

putting up a pole-frame structure to house a tree bog

you can plant and coppice trees around your tree bog, which will absorb the nutrients and moisture - willow is particularly good for this
