Firebelly’s founder Rachel Baker’s passion about the power that local food has to address social and environmental issues cannot be underestimated, and since moving to Bristol in 2007 she has worked towards this goal. Her roles have included campaigning against supermarket sprawl, teaching cooking workshops, and running food-based social outreach programs.

In 2011 she decided to take a more hands on approach to localising food, developing her lifelong love of cooking and baking into a profession. She trained as an apprentice at Tracebridge Sourdough, then went on to work as a baker at The Thoughtful Bread Company until 2013, when she was ready to go it alone.

Firebelly Bakery opened its doors (or rather erected its gazebo) for the first time in May 2013 at Picton Street fair, metres from Rachel’s door where the bread is baked. Since then, the bakery has gone from strength to strength (with a whole lot of work and many sleepless nights in between), and Firebelly attends regular markets as well as offering a bespoke cake service.

We have also developed our educational arm, working with disadvantaged groups around bread making, and running public workshops – teaching small groups the beautiful craft of making bread, cakes and pastries. Please see the courses section for more information on this.
