Green Willow Funerals was first conceived by John Bettles, the then Chief Executive to both Cardiff YMCA and Cardiff YMCA Housing Association, following the death of his mother in 1991. It is owned by the Trustees of the Cardiff YMCA who receive the profits annually. The company actually functioned for several months from the YMCA premises. Cardiff at that time had only one independent funeral director. The first funeral was on May 23rd 1997 at St Augustine’s Church, Rumney, followed by burial at the Duke of  Westminster’s Estate, Ecclestone, Cheshire the next day. On obtaining rented premises in Pillmawr Road, Malpas, Newport, our first funeral home opened in July 1997.

Just over 2 years later in 1999 suitable rented premises were identified in St Isan Road, Heath Cardiff. These were converted to serve Cardiff and the surrounding area, although these premises have no mortuary facilities, this being provided and serviced by the mortuary in Newport until the Dinas Powys premises opened in December 2004, this funeral home serving Dinas Powys, Penarth, Sully, Barry, the surrounding communities and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Since those early days the company has proven to be a great success. Built upon a strong community based moral and ethical framework with clear aims, the company now has three offices located in South Wales, and now employs a staff of 14. Green Willow Funerals performs funerals largely in South Wales but when requested provides services to anywhere in the United Kingdom. We also help many families where death has occurred overseas.

Our Company Ethos

Although Green WIllow Funerals is a trading company for profit, the success of the company in a great part has come from the ethos that the company adopted when founded and that it proudly maintains today.

  • The company and its staff will provide a transparent, compassionate service to its clients and the families that it serves.
  • The approach to the client will be client centred and at all times impartial, professional advice will be provided giving the client all options possible.
  • We will enable and support the client and empower them to be the decision maker and, having provided the required information, always ensure that they understand why they have made those decisions and that it remains appropriate to their needs.
  • We will maintain professional fees that meet the needs of the company and its commitments and reflect the services provided; however these charges are not purely profit driven and are levied at a rate that provides a cost effective option to the clients and the communities that we serve when they are compared to the charges made by the company’s competitors.
  • All clients, regardless of gender, faith or belief are treated as equals and the company is an equal opportunity employer
  • As a company owned by a Christian and charitable body, the Cardiff YMCA, the company and its staff aim to maintain and uphold in all matters Christian principles and teachings, although they (the staff) are not required to be practising Christians.
