    Profile:

We run courses in low impact building methods using locally sourced trees and earth. Orchard Barn is an off-grid rural skills centre in Mid Suffolk, UK. We harvest our own water, have constructed a Wattle and Daub water-free compost toilet, and use a range of hand operated tools. Book one of our Natural Building Experience days and benefit from our experience of setting up an off-grid, community based, learning project. Our teaching workshop is a carefully restored 17th century timber frame barn and traditional orchard. We run timber frame courses using green oak and traditional hand tools. Our current project is the reinstatement of a 1580 Long House 'like for like' using trees from the local woods, coppice material and home-dug earth. We run by OBee Community Interest Company, a not-for-profit community enterprise that specialises in using natural and traditional building projects as ways of bringing people together to learn. With our Craft Barn reaching completion the number and range of rural craft course we can offer is expanding. We've just added courses in Cob Sculpture, Hurdle/Shave Horse making, Greenwood for Gardeners, and Greenwood as the solution to the plastic problem. Come along and get hands-on skills development whilst reducing your carbon foot print.

There’s a crash coming – a slap from Mother Nature. This isn’t pessimistic; it’s realistic.

The human impact on nature and on each other is accelerating and needs systemic change to reverse.

We’re not advocating poverty, or a hair-shirt existence. We advocate changes that will mean better lives for almost everyone.
