Profile:
Jane Meredith of Plant Dyed Wool learnt to spin on a smallholding, and it made sense with masses of yarn to learn to knit. She boiled up various flowers and leaves to see what colour she could get from them. It was a natural progression to felting and weaving, and now she makes things and teaches other people to do the same. Brinkley looms were invented by a Mr. Pink who lived in the village of Brinkley. She now supplies looms, and the heddles and loom frames all made locally. They are sold to people on workshops, and I also at Guilds and Wool Fairs. They are now available online. She makes a small, a medium and a large Brinkley loom. They are very simple to use, and she often teaches children to weave on them. A large one takes about 10 minutes to warp up, which will make anyone who knows about weaving gasp! The heddle is a brilliant design into which you lay the warp threads, turn it on its side to make the shed and you also use the heddle to beat down the weft and push the weaving around the loom. But it needs to be seen to be understood! Jane makes scarves, wallhangings, shawls, throws, cushion covers, bags, and has even made a dress and a jacket. She uses yarn and often just teased-out fleece for the weft.
