Free timber framing training on building projects for good causes

Free timber framing training on building projects for good causes

Making beautiful natural buildings affordable for charities, community groups, trusts and pubic organisations who put other people and the environment first.

Our Community Building Camps give you a chance to learn by collaborating on a real building project. Your participation assists the charity, community group or school accomplish the building of their dreams. The event is something between work experience, volunteering and crowd funding, but not a course. The main currency is your physical work and every participant pays £40 per week which is used to cover the costs of Katherine cooking our evening meals. This is payable in advance via the bookings page and is used as a deposit to book your place.

There will be the opportunity to stay on for longer if you’d like but we ask a minimum commitment of two weeks and will give preference to those that can commit to three. Also please note that because of the nature of this event you must be physically fit, strong and competent with tools. Camping available.

The first project for 2017 is at Farms For City Children. We are building a roundhouse to be used as a toilet, shower and wash area. The design will have a few interesting features: a faceted, fan shaped roof attached to the reciprocal rafters; a curved, vertical log wall; and cruck-frame-style wind braces.  During these 3 weeks we also have some smaller A frame structures to build. We are now taking bookings for the second camp in 2017 (below) as April is full.

The second project for 2017 will take place at our woodyard on Duchy Home Farm. We’ll be camping and eating here. Check this link … our woodyard … for more details about the venue. The roundhouse will for a school and during these two weeks we will be cutting all joints on the timber frame and will also be working on other components of the building and may even have two projects to work on. The design will be a free standing turf roof roundhouse. The dates are 12th – 23rd June. If you would like to be involved please email me including any relevant experience or skills.

    We welcome questions.

There’s a crash coming – a slap from Mother Nature. This isn’t pessimistic; it’s realistic.

The human impact on nature and on each other is accelerating and needs systemic change to reverse.

We’re not advocating poverty, or a hair-shirt existence. We advocate changes that will mean better lives for almost everyone.
