    Profile:

The Shieling Project explores our landscape’s past, to help shape a more resilient future.   Each summer young people used to help take the livestock up the hill to the shieling, camping there in small bothies, learning about the world beyond the village.  We can learn a lot from this tradition about ourselves, our food, heritage and sustainability.

The Shieling Project is a social enterprise, working with schools, teachers and local community. With us you might learn how to milk a cow, make butter and cheese, cut peats, weave, dye or re-build shieling huts. We delve into the stories, songs, poems and place-names of the shieling.   From this rich heritage, we can understand the changing  landscape, and the skills needed to sustain rural communities. There’s a crash coming – a slap from Mother Nature. This isn’t pessimistic; it’s realistic.

The human impact on nature and on each other is accelerating and needs systemic change to reverse.

We’re not advocating poverty, or a hair-shirt existence. We advocate changes that will mean better lives for almost everyone.
